An intermittent DSG problem may disappear by the time the vehicle reaches the workshop. That does not mean the complaint is imagined; it means the diagnosis needs fault history, environmental data and repeatable test conditions.
Common Patterns
- Only when cold
- Only after extended driving
- After stop-start traffic
- During hard acceleration
- After reversing or manoeuvring
- After rain or washing
- After battery voltage drops
- Disappears after restarting
Why Two Days May Be Needed
Cold-start testing, heat soak, repeated road tests and data logging can take longer than a brief appointment. Leaving the vehicle can be more productive than repeated short visits.
Preserve Freeze-Frame Data
Do not clear codes before the assessment. Freeze-frame information can show temperature, voltage, selected gear and operating state when the fault set.
When The Fault Cannot Be Reproduced
The workshop can document baseline checks, stored evidence and the next test plan. It should not replace expensive parts solely because a fault is intermittent.
DSG faults should be diagnosed from the complete evidence: gearbox identity, fault history, electrical supply, hydraulic and clutch data, mechanical condition and the circumstances in which the problem occurs.
