Whether a vehicle can be driven depends on the exact symptom. A minor intermittent warning is different from a gearbox that drops into neutral, will not select Reverse or makes severe mechanical noise.
Stop And Tow When
- Drive or Reverse is unavailable
- The gearbox selects neutral unexpectedly
- There is a major oil leak
- Grinding or heavy mechanical noise is present
- The vehicle cannot move safely with traffic
- The warning instructs you to stop
- The fault worsens rapidly as the gearbox warms
Why Continued Driving Can Be Risky
Repeated pressure loss can overwork a pump. A slipping clutch can overheat. Internal debris can circulate through a wet-clutch system. Sudden loss of drive creates a road-safety risk.
Do Not Repeatedly Cycle Gears
Continually selecting Drive and Reverse to force engagement can increase clutch heat and hydraulic demand. If the vehicle will not engage normally, stop testing it on the road.
Information For The Workshop
Provide the exact warning, which gears are available, whether the fault is hot or cold and whether restarting changes the symptom. This helps determine whether towing is required.
DSG faults should be diagnosed from the complete evidence: gearbox identity, fault history, electrical supply, hydraulic and clutch data, mechanical condition and the circumstances in which the problem occurs.
