DSG Warning Light On: Should You Keep Driving?

What to do when PRNDS flashes or a gearbox warning appears, and when towing is safer than continuing to drive.

A flashing PRNDS display or transmission warning means the control system has detected a fault. Some vehicles continue to drive in a reduced mode, while others may lose Drive, Reverse or a group of gears.

Stop And Arrange Towing When

  • The vehicle will not select Drive or Reverse
  • Drive cuts in and out or the vehicle is unsafe in traffic
  • There is severe grinding, banging or mechanical noise
  • Transmission fluid is leaking heavily
  • A red or critical warning instructs you to stop
  • The gearbox overheats repeatedly

Information To Record

Photograph the warning, note whether the fault occurred cold or hot, record the gear and driving condition, and avoid clearing codes before diagnosis. Freeze-frame and fault-frequency information may be useful.

Do Not Assume A Service Will Clear It

A warning can relate to voltage, wiring, clutch position, pressure, pump operation, mechatronic electronics or mechanical damage. Diagnosis should determine the cause before maintenance or parts are authorised.
