Wet Versus Dry DSG Clutches: What Owners Need To Know

The practical differences between dry-clutch DQ200 and wet-clutch DSG systems, including service, heat, wear and repair procedures.

Not every DSG uses the same clutch design. The DQ200 uses a dry dual clutch, while DQ250, DQ381, DQ500 and longitudinal Audi S tronic gearboxes generally use wet multi-plate clutch assemblies.

Dry Clutch DSG

A dry clutch operates without the clutch plates being immersed in transmission fluid. It can be efficient and compact, but take-off quality depends heavily on clutch condition, flywheel movement, calibration and mechatronic control.

Wet Clutch DSG

A wet clutch uses oil for cooling and controlled engagement. The transmission requires the correct fluid specification, filter arrangements and level-setting procedure. Contaminated fluid can provide clues about clutch or internal wear.

Why The Difference Matters

  • Different service requirements and fluid specifications
  • Different clutch replacement tools and measurements
  • Different heat-management and contamination concerns
  • Different mechatronic and hydraulic designs
  • Different basic settings and adaptation procedures
