How To Identify Your DSG Gearbox

Why vehicle model and gear count are not enough, and how VIN, build data, gearbox codes and scan identification confirm a DSG family.

A vehicle advertised as a “seven-speed DSG” could use a DQ200, DQ380, DQ381, DQ500, DL382, DL501-related system or a specialised hybrid or high-performance unit. Ordering parts from the gear count alone is risky.

Useful Identification Sources

  • VIN and manufacturer build data
  • Transmission code on the vehicle-data label
  • Code stamped or labelled on the gearbox
  • Diagnostic control-unit identification
  • Engine, driveline and model-year combination
  • Existing mechatronic or transmission part numbers

Why Identification Affects The Quote

Gearbox type changes the clutch, fluid, filter, mechatronic, labour procedure, coding and parts availability. Even within one family, front-wheel-drive, all-wheel-drive and hybrid variants may differ.
