The terms coding, programming, basic settings and adaptation are often used interchangeably, but they describe different tasks. A complete DSG repair may require several of them.
Coding
Coding tells the control unit about vehicle configuration and installed equipment. Incorrect coding can create communication or operation faults.
Programming And Software
Programming installs or updates control-unit software. Some replacement units need online functions, security access or component protection removal.
Basic Settings
Basic settings run defined procedures so the mechatronic can learn selector, clutch and hydraulic reference positions.
Adaptations
Adaptations are learned values that compensate for clutch characteristics and operating tolerances. They are not a magic reset for damaged components.
Why Procedures Fail
Low voltage, incorrect fluid level, incompatible software, mechanical binding, worn clutches or unresolved faults can prevent completion. The failure result is diagnostic evidence, not a reason to repeat the process indefinitely.
DSG faults should be diagnosed from the complete evidence: gearbox identity, fault history, electrical supply, hydraulic and clutch data, mechanical condition and the circumstances in which the problem occurs.
